If you’re someone who enjoys getting out and experiencing your community, the walkability to and from food stores, coffee shops and things to do in your area, is important. Plus, walking is good for your health. According to AmericaWalks.org:
- Brisk walking (≥3.5 mph) has been shown to reduce body fat, lower blood pressure, increase high-density lipoprotein, and even reduce risks of bone fracture.
- Brisk walking has also been associated with lower mortality rates from cardiovascular disease and cancer.
Garden Communities uses an application called Walk Score that makes it easy for residents/potential residents to determine what there is to do in a walkable distance to and from their apartment.
The Walk Score – Defined
Walk Score generates a number (known as a score) based on walkability from your apartment to various locations. Here’s what each score means:
90 to 100 – These errands do not require a car.
70 to 89 – Most of these errands can be completed by walking.
50 to 69 – Some of these amenities are within walking distance.
25 to 49 – There are few amenities that are within walking distance.
0 to 24 – You’ll need a car for these errands.
Using Walk Score
Walk Score is easy and free to use. Visit the Resident Login Area on our website, log in and select “Neighborhood” to access Walk Score. When you enter the community you currently live in or the community you are considering moving to in accessing the Resident Login Area, Walk Score will automatically generate a map of local places to visit. A listing of restaurants, coffee shops, parks, schools and more will show up on a map with a Walk Score. Navigating these listings to obtain more information is easy and can be achieved with just a few clicks.
