Watchung Reservation is one of America’s first county parks! It has almost 2,000 acres of hiking trails, riding rings and more, so you can stay active while connecting with nature. With so much to do, you can explore this park every day for a week and still find more adventures. We’ll highlight two of our favorite spots inside the Reservation, but be sure to check out the Union County Parks website for trail maps and more information.

History Trail

There is so much history in this reservation park. With this 6-mile trail, you will be brought by and to sites of historical interest. It is a loop trail, meaning it starts and ends at the same spot, so getting back to a vehicle will be easy. An added perk is that it is pet friendly, so you can bring your beloved dog to get some exercise, as well.

Deserted Village

Peter Willcocks built a sawmill along the Blue Brook in 1736. That mill saw several iterations over the nearly two centuries since its inception, even becoming a summer resort in the late 1880s. However, in 1916 it fell into disrepair. Soon after, in 1921, it became part of the Watchung Reservation and has served as an historical destination ever since. It has 10 buildings that still stand. The Reservation has pamphlets available for a self-guided walking tour.

Visit the Local Golf Courses

Did you know that New Jersey has some of the best golf courses in the Northeast? We’re very proud of that. And golf is a great anaerobic exercise. A round of golf can help improve circulation in the extremities and vastly improve your heart health. Not to mention the fresh air and Vitamin D! Here are two golf courses close to Woodcrest at Berkeley Heights.

Ash Brook Golf Course

In nearby Scotch Plains, NJ, the Ash Brook Golf Course was originally built in 1953 but was meticulously maintained and updated. Join tournaments and outings, get golf instruction, or leisurely play 9 or 18 holes at your own pace on the lush and generous fairways. The clubhouse was recently renovated to include a pro shop, offices, men’s and women’s restrooms, as well as The Tavern at Ash Brook, a rotisserie-style restaurant with delectable food and drinks.

Galloping Hills Golf Course

With over 270 gorgeous green acres, Galloping Hills Golf Course is known as “The Golf Course That Never Sleeps”. It is often referred to as “The Hill” and is known for being one of the most challenging courses in the area. In addition to the 18-hole course, you also have access to a 9-hole practice course at The Learning Center. This course is great for golfers of every level but is geared towards those who enjoy a challenge.

Visit Lower Columbia Park

In this recreation area, you will find tennis, pickleball, and other courts ready for use. Get in some full cardiovascular workouts on these courts. Be sure to check out the rules and regulations before visiting. Senior Citizen residents over the age of 65 are granted free access to this space. But remember- no pets are allowed on these courts. So while your dog would be great at retrieving errant tennis balls, she or he will have to stay home.
