Middlesex County Facts & Origins
New Brunswick serves as the county seat for Middlesex County. As of the 2018 U.S. Census, the county is estimated to have a population of about 829,685, making it the second most populated county in New Jersey. This places it just behind Bergen County. The average household income is for the county is estimated to be $83,133.
Middlesex County’s name took inspiration from a historic county of the same name located in England. The Lenni Lenape, a tribe of indigenous people, were the first-known inhabitants of the region. They developed an extensive system of roads during this time, and many of them are still used by county residents today.
People settled here due to the region’s proximity to the Raritan River. Since the river empties out into the Atlantic Ocean, the region became a prime destination for traders. Many businesses have set up shop in the area since then.

Middlesex County offers multiple transportation options for residents to use. New Jersey Transit offers several train lines through the county, including Northeast Corridor, North Jersey Coast and Raritan Valley. In addition, the service’s bus routes go through every township in the county.
In regards to roadways, the New Jersey Turnpike goes through the county, and offers easy access to the rest of the state. This ease of access also allows for easy commutes to New York and Pennsylvania. In regards to higher education, the county is home to many prestigious colleges and universities. Rutgers, the official State University of New Jersey is among the most notable establishments. Other notable schools that are found here include the Middlesex County College, and DeVry University’s North Brunswick Campus.
