Somerset County was first settled in 1861, and was established on May 14th, 1688. It was developed around Bound Brook, with portions of the county coming from the nearby Middlesex County. The county’s name was derived from Somerset, a county located in Southwest England.

During the World Wars, the county was prominent for housing weapon depots and facilities that were used to knit blankets for soldiers. Somerset was primarily an agricultural community, but starting in the 1960s its townships developed into thriving suburban communities.

This growth was thanks in part to new technological developments, along with advancements in pharmaceuticals.

Somerset County is currently the second wealthiest county in New Jersey, and is one of the top 20 wealthiest counties in the country. Major reasons for this are the success the county found in its agricultural days, along with its thriving pharmaceutical industry. Its proximity to New York has also played a role in its strong financial status.

As of 2018, the county has a population of 331,164, and a median household income of $111,772. In regards to transportation, NJ Transit offers rail and bus services for residents of Somerset County. The Raritan Valley Line and the Gladstone Branch are the primary rail lines offered for local residents. County shuttles are also available through the SCOOT, DASH, and CAT services, and paratransit services are available for residents with disabilities.

Through Interstates 78 and 287, residents are easily connected to major locations in New York and Pennsylvania. When you need to fly out of state, there are three airports at your disposal: Central Jersey Regional Airport, Princeton Airport, and Somerset Airport. Somerset Airport is particularly useful if you need to go on a corporate trip.

Somerset County operates 17 high schools and several other educational facilities, which are spread across 16 school districts. Somerset’s schools considered some of the best in the state of New Jersey.

Among the most notable schools is Montgomery High School, which has been lauded for the quality of its teaching staff. There’s also Somerset County Vocational Tech High School, which offers a wide range of academic programs that help students prepare for college.

There are two major colleges in Somerset County, one of which is the Raritan Valley Community College. Raritan offers a wide range of classes and programs, ranging from engineering to arts and design. There’s also Pillar College, formerly known as Somerset Christian College, located in Franklin Township. Many of the schools in Somerset County are considered some of the best that New Jersey has to offer.

One of the hallmarks of Somerset County is its extensive park system. Among the county’s most notable parks is Colonial Park, which is famous for its award-winning horticultural displays. There’s also East County Park, which has a half-mile long nature trail that is ideal for jogging.

For sports fans, Somerset has its own baseball team, the Somerset Patriots, who play out of the TD Bank Ballpark in Bridgewater Township. When you need to go shopping, the Liberty Village Premium Outlets in Flemington and Bridgewater Commons are two great places to visit.
